About the Visual Arts Guide

Wols, Le Feu, 1947-1949

The question of what constitutes art has been argued over at least since Zeuxis and Parrhasius argued over who was the more skilled at mimesis. Theories and definitions of art fluctuate and evolve, and our fascination with the visual arts compels new work every day and drives tens of thousands to visit art museums around the world. Of course, art doesn't exist only in museums--it's everywhere around us, from illicit murals thrown up on city walls to the sculpture in grassy parks and skyscraper lobbies.

Dive into the history, analysis, and techniques of art with the HFU Library's resources. Our print collection is small but comprehensive, and our databases provide students with access to the most recent scholarly articles, as well as biographical material, background information, and critical theory. Check out the "websites" tab for a list of valuable non-library resources!

If you're here because this is your first foray into scholarly research, begin with a review of our "Doing Library Research" guide, or just jump right in and explore our databases. Additionally, the HFU Library is fully staffed with librarians who are always happy to work with you. Get in touch!
