Locating Print Books

Searching for materials at Holy Family is easy! To locate books:
  1. On the Library page, click the Print Book icon.
  2. Enter a book title or group of words that describe your topic
  3. Once you find the item you need, click for more details and the item record will appear.
  4. Please note the item's location and call number to locate the item within the Library.
  5. Patrons can also place the item on "hold" which will hold the item for patrons to pick up at the front information desk at a later time.

A Word About Call Numbers

While it is always best to search the library catalog (see below) for materials that are in print, you will find education-related books in these call numbers at both the Philadelphia Campus Library or the Newtown LRC:

L - Education

LA - Fundamentals of education, education history

LB - Theory and practical aspects of teaching, lesson planning materials, general education topics

LC - Special education and social aspects of education

BF - Psychology related to education and child development

For lesson planning materials and teaching in the subject areas, check subject-specific call numbers:

H - social studies topics

PE and PN - language arts and reading

Q - Science

QA - Math

Why Use Reference Materials?

Reference materials ARE NOT primary sources, but can lead you to books and articles.

Reference materials are useful for research because they:

  • Can provide background information about a topic
  • Can define terms
  • Can provide the names of key theorists
  • May provide synonyms for terms you can use when looking for articles and books
  • Sometimes include references to useful sources

Locating eBooks

You can use the library catalog to search for eBooks as well.

Here are the step-by-step instructions. For visual guides please refer to the PDF attached below:

  1. Begin on the Library Website
  2. Click on the Library Catalog tab
  3. Search your book title (make sure to include as much of the full title as possible to find better results)
  4. Within the results look for your book that has the PDF icon listed.
  5. Select the PDF link and your book should display.
    • To save for future use/access, make sure to save the item's "permalink" (not the website URL)
